AMITYVILLE, NY - In profound sorrow we announce the passing of Mrs. Orrie L. "Shortie" Mazyck-Carroll, 71 of Amityville, NY, who entered into eternal rest on January 15, 2021.

Orrie Lee “Shortie” Mazyck Carroll was born on May 31, 1949 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to the late Caesar and Azerlee Mazyck. She attended New Mt. Zion AME and Greater St. James AME Churches in Summerville. Orrie’s childhood years were spent in South Carolina and later in New York. She lived in Amityville, NY until she entered into eternal peace.

Orrie was educated at Whitesville Elementary and Berkley Training High School in South Carolina. She later moved to Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. Orrie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Finance from Audrey Cohen College (now Metropolitan College of New York).

During her life’s journey, Orrie met and married Reginald A. Carroll. Orrie gave birth to two sons, Lester and Marshal. Orrie was a devoted mother who loved and cared for her sons.

Orrie began her career with the New York Youth Services Agency, supporting young students in the communities of East New York and Brownsville in Brooklyn, NY. Orrie later joined an African American Breast Cancer Support Group, The Sisters of Greater Long Island Inc., where she served on the board as a secretary and subsequently became president of the organization. During her tenure with the group, she was instrumental in bringing keynote speakers to fundraisers such as Pat Battle (NBC4 news anchor/reporter) and Bonnie Edsall (Breast Health Center/Radiation Oncology Nurse Manager and Cancer Patient Navigator).

Orrie also loved traveling within the US, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean Islands. She visited Moncks Corner and Summerville often for family reunions. She enjoyed going to Charleston, touring the Low Country and Johns and James Island.
