SUMMERVILLE, SC - In profound sorrow the Alston Family announces the passing of their beloved, Mrs. Jannette Simmons Alston, 81 of Summerville, SC., who entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, November 21, 2020 at her residence.
Remembering Her Spirit
Mrs. Jannette Simmons Alston was born to the late Mr. James Marion Simmons and Mrs. Addie Lemon on March 14, 1939 in Dorchester County. She departed this life on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at her residence.
She attended public schools in Dorchester County. After finishing high school, she migrated to Philadelphia, PA where she met her husband the late Leroy Alston, Sr. She was united in holy matrimony in 1960. To that union four children were born.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age. Jannette served at Davis Temple Baptist Church for several years in Philadelphia, Pa.
In 1972, she relocated with her husband and four (4) children to Summerville, SC. She rejoined as a member of Branch AME Church, she served in several capacities. Her faithfulness and dedication were evident in everything she did. She worked as the President of the Senior and Gospel Choirs. Her love for music and her ability to play the piano was a gift that will be greatly missed. She also served as president of the Women’s Missionary Society, Charleston District. She could always be dependent upon to attend every meeting. She was always the leader in finding ways to help those in need to creating opportunities to share God’s love with those who needed a helping hand. She also served as Class Leader, Church Musician, president, and church program committee. Her kind and gentle demeaner caused everyone to Love her.
Outside of church, she spent her time cooking and spending time with family and friends. She was Chef If you ever had the chance to taste her potato salad, macaroni, and cheese, live and onions or any variety of cakes, you would agree.
Her greatest love was ministering the gospel of Jesus Christ through sons. She was a member of the Gospel Uplifters. They sung all over the low country for several years. She worked as a supervisor for Albright Wilson for several years. She late went to work at Dorchester District 2 School District as a custodian, until she retired in 2010.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Skinner, three sisters, Marion Shannon, Dorothy Hutchinson, and Mary Smith, one brother, James Simmons, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three children, Anthony (Cathy) Alston of Walterboro, SC., Angela (Troy) Greene, and Leroy Alston, Jr., both of Summerville, SC., nine grandchildren, including two very special devoted granddaughters, Tamika Bunch, and Marquita Tillman, 17 great grandchildren, two sisters, Hattie Spruill and Evelyn Locke of Summerville, SC, three sisters-in-laws, Novella Walker of Philadelphia, PA, Doretha Green of Woodbridge, VA, and Delois Corbitt of Philadelphia, PA., six brother-in-law, Jerome Alston of Jacksonville, NC, Melvin Alston of Philadelphia, PA., Cleveland Alston Philadelphia, PA. and Roosevelt Alston of Philadelphia, PA., Otis Shannon of Philadelphia, PA, one very devoted brother-in-law, Richard Hutchinson of Summerville, SC., and host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends. One very special and devoted friend, Barbara Wynns.
