Mrs. Georgianna Blocker Summerhill

SUMMERVILLE, SC. - In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of The Serenity Mortuary announce the passing of Mrs. Georgianna Blocker Summerhill, 78 of Summerville, SC., who entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Trident Hospital, North Charleston, SC. following a long illness.

Georgianna was born on June 1, 1943 to Alfred, Jr. and Alethia Blocker in Charleston, SC.  She spent many of her formative years in New York where she attended St. Aloysius Elementary School and Cathedral High School for Girls, until her family returned to Charleston, SC after her first year of high school. Georgianna graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charleston in 1961, and went on to earn her B.A. degree in History from Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1965. Upon graduating from Howard, she began her career as an educator at Baptist Hill High School in Younges Island, SC, where she taught for 30 years and served as the Teacher Cadet Program Chair. Never content to rest on her laurels, she went on to obtain her M.A. degree in Teaching from The Citadel in Charleston, SC.
In 1964, Georgianna met William Summerhill at her mom’s diner in Charleston, SC, and they wed on August 20, 1966.  To this union, two children were born: William Jr. and George Anthony.
In addition to being a dedicated and conscientious teacher, Georgianna was an active member of her community. She served on numerous committees for her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Charleston County School District, the South Carolina Council for Social Studies, the Rollings, Spann, and Summerville Elementary Schools combined PTA, the Spann Elementary and Summerville Elementary School Advisory Councils, the Dorchester Section of the National Council of Negro Women, and a Cub-Scout Pack Parent.
Georgianna joyfully retired as an educator in 1995. She spent her retirement years traveling with her husband, William, baking her world-famous chewies, being active in her beloved sorority, and spending time with her six grandchildren, who were her pride and joy!
Georgianna was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Florence Blocker Lively, and her brother, Alfred Blocker III. She is survived by her dedicated husband of nearly 56 years, William Summerhill, Sr.; her eldest son, William Summerhill, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; her son, George Summerhill of Summerville, SC; her daughters-in-law, Hope Summerhill of Charlotte, NC and Schoneke Summerhill of Summerville, SC; her six grandchildren, Grant, Grayson, and Paige Summerhill of Charlotte, NC and Hampton, Grace, and Davis Summerhill of Summerville, SC; her goddaughter, Charlene Speed; and a host of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 1pm at Summerville Country Club.
