NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - In profound sorrow we announce the passing of Mr. Charles T. Melvin, Sr., 61 of North Charleston, SC., who entered into eternal rest on Friday morning, May 1, 2020 at his residence. Mr. Melvin is a US Navy Veteran and a hospitality worker and the husband of Mrs. Frances Mackey Melvin.
The Life Reflection of Mr. Charles Tanner Melvin, Sr.
Charles Tanner Melvin (Chuck) was born September 17, 1958 in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late Howard Charles Melvin and Beatrice Tanner Melvin. He was the youngest of their four children. Chuck always loved being around people and serving others from a young child through his adult life. He joined the Boy Scouts of America and remained involved into adulthood participating in the National Jamboree.
Chuck was educated in Cincinnati Public Schools and graduated from Woodward High School in 1976. He attended Fisk University, Wright State University and Cincinnati State Technical & Community College before joining the United States Navy for 12 years.
During his time in the Navy he was stationed in Milwaukee, WI, San Diego, CA, and Charleston, SC. He served his country during the Gulf War and traveled around the world during his tenure. Most of his Navy career he was stationed at Goose Creek Naval Weapons Station in South Carolina. He was classified as Petty Officer First Class Weapons Tech.
He was first united in marriage to Patricia Campbell in 1986. To this union were three children: Charlene Tanner Melvin, Deja Vonne Bailey and Charles Tanner Melvin, Jr.
He was a lifelong member of the A.M.E. Church. He grew up in Allen Temple A.M.E. Church in Cincinnati, Ohio where he served as a trustee and participated in the male chorus. While living in Charleston, S.C. he attended Friendship True Bibleway #1.
After his military career, Chuck worked for Arby’s, OfficeMax, Sunset Mortgage Company and UPS in Cincinnati before transferring to Charleston, SC. Chuck was the only family member to perfect his dad’s famous family cookie recipe. His children, nieces and nephews loved the chocolate chip cookies he made for them.
He most recently resided in Charleston, S.C. with his wife Frances (Jenkins). Chuck was employed at the Embassy Suites Hilton Hotel where he used his gift of gab and love of people to graciously host thousands of guests from around the world. He loved to call family and friends back home and share stories of the many guests he encountered, or to call you so you could talk or reconnect with one of your friends he met during a stay at the hotel. If he met you he treated you as if he had known you all his life and as if you were family. Chuck was also employed by Charleston Limousine LLC.; where he drove numerous famous people and some not so famous people from around the world. Anytime they returned to Charleston he was their requested driver due to his hospitable personality and the overwhelming kindness shown to them from the moment he met them.
Chuck departed this life on Friday, May 1, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father Howard Charles Melvin. He is survived by his wife of 23 years Frances Melvin; daughters Charlene Tanner Melvin, Deja Vonne Bailey (Kristofer, Sr.) and son Charles Tanner Melvin, Jr. (Melanie); mother Beatrice Tanner Melvin; brothers Dr. Howard Daryl Melvin (Camille), Dr. C. Keith Melvin (Cassandra); sisters Bonita K. White (Keith), Hilary Brooks; grandchildren Kyla J. Melvin, Carter A. Tanner Miller, Korrine Vonne Bailey, Kristofer Bailey, Jr., Kristofer Princeton Bailey, III; step-children Thomas Jenkins, III (Tamara), Frederick Jenkins, Carla Prioleau (Henry), Annquinette Johnson, Lloyd Jenkins (Jamie), and Neil Jenkins; sister-in-laws Gayle Starling Melvin and Rosalie Stevenson; brother-in-laws Harold C. Mackey, II (Dorothy) William Mackey, I (Courtland), Lewis Mackey (Eliza); and a host of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, cousins and a host of extended family and close friends.
