Lieutenant Maybelle W. Hendricks Obituary (1950

MONCKS CORNER, SC - In profound sorrow the Hendricks and Williams Families announce the passing of their beloved Lieutenant Maybelle W. Hendricks, 70 of Moncks Corner, SC., (also of Summerville, SC.), who entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, August 17, 2020 at a local hospital. Lieutenant Hendricks was a officer serving with Ridgeville Police Department, Ridgeville, SC. and the first African American Female Officer with Summerville Police Department, Summerville, SC. Her Legacy Maybelle Hendricks was born on July 28, 1950, to the late Johnny and Earline Williams in Summerville, SC. She made her eternal transition on Monday, August 17, 2020. As a child, she attended the public schools of Summerville and later graduated from Alston High School in 1969. Maybelle was incredibly active in school and excelled in sports. While enrolled at Alston, she played basketball and held the position of forward, averaging 22 points per game. Maybelle was a cheerleader for the Alston Tigers, a majorette and a member of the track team. On May 29, 1999, she was inducted into the Alston High School Hall of Fame. Maybelle joined the Summerville Police Department in September of 1981, simultaneously breaking social and cultural barriers and making local history. She was the first African American female employed by the department. In 1982, Maybelle graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC. She remained with Summerville Police Department from 1981 to 1989, where she received two promotions to achieve detective rank. During the course of her career, Maybelle served with Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, St. George Police Department, Colleton County Sheriff's Office, and Ridgeville Police Department where she received numerous awards and recognition to include Police Woman of the Year and Deputy of the Year. Maybelle ended her long career after thirty-nine years with Ridgeville Police Department as Assistant Chief when she became ill under the leadership of Chief Quintion Joyner. She leaves to cherish loving memories: three children Samuel "Travis" (Tammy) Williams of Summerville SC, Stacy Williams of Moncks Corner SC, and Latasha (Gerald) Jenkins of Moncks Corner SC; six siblings, Lillian Simmons of New Jersey, Ervin(Virgie) Williams of Summerville, Rosalyn Bradley of New York, Elizabeth Ford of New York, Judy Williams and Barbara Mitchell of Summerville, Roosevelt and Steve Williams proceeded her in death; Seven grandchildren; Lauren Williams, S. Travis Williams, Gillian Williams, Brian Recoma, Londyn Matlock, Camren Jenkins, Gerald Jenkins Jr., and Richard Sabb; one great-grandchild, Karis Morrison; kids she raised as her own; Nakia Jones, Brandon Williams, Johnathon Williams, Alexus Guinyard, and Marleigh Mazyck and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special brother, role model, and dear friend in law enforcement, Tillman Millhouse Jr. of Summerville SC. *** DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THE FAMILY OF LIEUTENANT HENDRICKS REQUESTS NO VISITORS AT THE RESIDENCE THIS TIME, PLEASE CALL WHEN CAN TO OFFER PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES.****
