Mr. Horace Lee Mungin Obituary (1941

RIDGEVILLE, SC - In profound sorrow we the Management & Staff of The Serenity Mortuary announce the passing of Mr. Horace Lee Mungin, 80 of Ridgeville, SC., who entered into eternal rest on Saturday afternoon, September 25, 2021 at his residence. Mr. Mungin is former US Army Veteran and a poet / free lance writer and the husband of Mrs. Gussie Sanders Mungin. Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. by Mary Elizabeth Frye -The Obituary- On Saturday September 25, at 2:55 p.m., my loving husband and devoted father departed from this earth for a better place. His presence will never be replaced, but we know that he will always be in our hearts as long as we live. God takes back his loved ones unto himself, after they have wrought such beautiful patterns during their sojourn here. Horace Lee Mungin was born August 5, 1941, in Hollywood, SC to the late Margaret and Horace Mungin. He was married to Gussie Sanders for 58 years. Also preceded him in death was his brother Ted Mungin. Horace Mungin was a pioneer and prolific writer in the Black Arts Movement. Horace was a poet, artist and activist who loved to write short stories and poems. His literary career would extend over 50 years. His first magazine Black Forum which he started in the 1970's and published for twelve years is also part of the permanent exhibition at the National Museum for African American History and Culture located in Washington, DC. Mr. Mungin also had a 20-year career in New York City with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA.) Horace was part of the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army in the early 1960's and served in Bamberg, Germany. He retired with the love of his life Gussie Mungin and returned to South Carolina where he focused on writing numerous newspaper columns and published dozens of books. He leaves to cherish his legacy, his devoted, caring, and loving wife Gussie Mungin his three (3) sons Vaughn Mungin (Isabel), Kevin Mungin and Malcolm Mungin (Adriane). Seven (7) grandchildren Miles Mungin, Taylor Mungin, Nazareth Mungin, Natalie Mungin, Faatimah Mungin, Haru Mungin and Amunet Jackson. Two (2) great grandchildren Mia Mungin and Elle Mungin. His two beautiful sisters and surviving siblings Helen Deas of Concord, NC and Barbara Lewis of Edgewood, SC. His uncle Leroy Morrison (Wihelmina) of Hollywood, SC. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
