Mr. Hill is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Gene Arthur Hill, Sr. affectionately known as “Gene Arthur,” “Puddin,” and “Daddy Gene.” was born November 9, 1938 to the late George R. Hill, Sr. and Hattie Banks Hill in Ridgeville, SC.
He was the oldest of four children. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Edmund Hill, George Hill, Jr., and Marion Hill.
Gene was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County, graduating after completing 12 years and receiving his high school diploma from Kennedy High School.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for 3 years at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. After being honorably discharged from the Marines, he married his high school sweetheart, Juanita Johnson on July 11, 1964. To this union, three children were born: Shujuan Hill Shannon, Patrick (Carol) Hill, and the late Gene A. Hill, Jr.
At an early age, Gene accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and diligently served at Bethel A.M.E. In the community, he served as a member of McDaniel Lodge #435 Prince Hall Affiliation Masons, TJ Felder Royal Arch #37 and Order of the Eastern Stars.
Gene loved the outdoors. Many days he could have been seen building a fence for his goats and other animals, mowing the lawn, sitting on his porch, riding his bike, and planting his garden of which he gave away many of his crops, particularly his okra. Gene leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Juanita, his two children: Shujuan Hill Shannon, Summerville, and Patrick (Carol) Hill, Ridgeville; five grandchildren: Stormy Nunn, Davion Hill, Benjamin Nunn, Faith Shannon, and Nyla Hill, eight great-grandchildren: Patrice Spell, Davaysha Hill, Kailyn Hill, Jadyn Hill, Jarvia Hill, Daleigh Hill & Davion Hill, Jr., and Taylor Hill, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
